Ralph & Da-rell's

It doesn't exist. Not yet.

It's Joe and Quinn's bar — the one that's been getting designed out loud for years now. Somewhere on the Central Coast. Salt on the windows, cold beer, no televisions. The kind of place where you stop in after the water and the afternoon quietly gets away from you.

We don't have the keys yet. We've got the logo.

The logo came first.

Around Covid, one Christmas, Joe gave Quinn a t-shirt. He and Jen had designed it themselves — heather grey, a hand-drawn cowboy hat, arched lettering across the chest like a sign that's been hanging off a two-lane highway since 1974. Ralph & Da-rell's, and underneath it, Whiskey Watering Hole.

Ralph is Quinn's middle name. Darrel is Joe's. It's spelled DA-RELL because that's how it gets said out loud — duh-RELL, not Darryl. Joe and Quinn are brothers-in-law. Jen and Kim are sisters. Between the four of them, that's Tuvi.

The shirt stuck. It got worn thin. The bar kept getting built anyway — in conversation, on drives, at the kitchen table. Still no keys.

So it goes on things instead.

A dad hat. A foam trucker. Same hat on the front, same arch, same two-lane-highway lettering.

The Central Coast has always been both things at once. Salt water and ranch land, wetsuits and work boots, Pismo to Paso in forty minutes. Ralph & Da-rell's is the second half of that, and it is entirely fictional.

First round's on us. Someday.
